Match Report

Rumney 19 – 26 Llandovery

A jubilant Geraint Williams hailed his team's performance as the visitors recorded a season's double in a thrilling encounter at Riverside Park. "In what was a very entertaining match our pack played superbly. Their tight control in the first half rewarded us with four tries, while the standard of defence in the second half was outstanding. It was a superb effort," said the Llandovery coach.

With conditions one would expect to experience in the beginning of December rather than the first week of April the wind, which at times whipped up to gale force, was to be a telling factor.

Llandovery took first-half advantage as they soon entrenched themselves deep in Rumney territory. Within three minutes centre Tracy Lewis had scored. Rumney's defence held firm as they battled the elements and an ascending Llandovery pack. However the pressure became too much as No 8 Chris Hughes went over from close range in the 30th minute. Tries followed as Stuart Hancox exploited a blind side gap before Hughes went over for his second following a clever, sniping run from scrum-half Danny Williams.

The second period belonged to Rumney. For what seemed an eternity they encamped themselves in the Drovers' half yet, crucially, they often lacked the finesse of a final pass. Tries from Simon Greedy, adding to Mark Bocock's first-half effort, were not enough to break the resilient Llandovery spirit.
