What the Papers Say - Eifion Morgan reports

Llandovery progressed into the first-round proper of the Schweppes Cup competition with a well-deserved win. But the issue was in the balance until the last quarter of a keenly-contested encounter. During this period Llandovery captured the initiative with a try by Geraint Williams which Nigel Clarke converted. From there on they were in complete control.

Llangennech kicked off and within a minute went ahead when Elwyn Davies landed a penalty following an offside infringement. And they maintained pressure, and Llandovery only found relief in clearance kicks.

Within ten minutes, however, Llangennech scored again. Their heavier pack wheeled the scrum and allowed the half-backs room which they used to full advantage, outside half Elwyn Davies breaking through and sending Huw Thomas over for the first try, which Davies converted.

The game then swung Llandovery’s way, and gradually they forced their way up to the Llangennech line. Following a scrum 20m the visitors’ backs ran the ball at the opposition and right wing Alun Williams reduced the deficit with a try.

Llandovery maintained the same pressure into the second half and the home side's defence was under considerable strain, particularly from well directed kicks. An attempted clearance kick was charged down by outside half Alan Morgan who picked up the bouncing ball and scored near the posts. Clarke converted to put Llandovery in front.

Nigel Clarke increased their lead with a penalty, but Elwyn Davies reduced the arrears to one point with his second penalty goal of the afternoon. This signalled a fight-back by Llangennech and only desperate tackling by the visitors prevented them scoring. Keith Thomas and full black Les Davies came close to scoring following good attacking runs. Llangennech had a further opportunity to take the lead but Davies was wide with a penalty attempt.

Llandovery again came back strongly and forced their way into the Llangennech 22m. area. Noel Page won good ball from a lineout and it was passed along to Alun Williams who cut inside his man, fed Geraint Williams on the loop, and Williams was over in the corner. Nigel Clarke converted and this meant that the home side now had to score twice. Llandovery increased their lead when Clarke kicked a further penalty from 50 metres. They scored their final try right on full time. Alun Williams robbed his opposite number and ran in from the halfway line.
