DROVERS TITTLE-TATTLE 3 March 2010

A weekly diary of news from Church Bank by Huw S Thomas

FIXTURES

The Llandovery RFC fixtures for the rest of the season - four home and four away – have now been finalised:

Tues March 16 v Pontypridd (h) 7 15

Wed April 14 v Bedwas (a) 19 30
Sat April 17 v Carmarthen Quins (a) 2 30

PLAY OFFS EXPLAINED

To reach the play-offs that will decide the 2010 champions, the Drovers must finish in the top eight of the table.

The draw for the knock-out stage will see 1st v 4th, 2nd v 3rd, 5th v 8th, 6th v 7th – the first named team getting home advantage.

The winners of the top two matches go straight through to the semi-finals, the losers of the last two matches are permanently eliminated.

The remaining four sides play off to reach the semi-finals.

BARBARIANS

On Tuesday 2 March two former Drovers in Tal Selley and Rhodri Gomer-Davies represented the Barbarians against Bedford Blues in the 83rd Mobbs Memorial Match.

Former Llandovery and current London Welsh prop Dorian Williams made his Barbarian debut in March 2007.

Former Drovers internationals Barry Williams and the late Carwyn Davies played for the famous invitation side in 2000 and 1988 respectively.

Fly-half Aled Williams – like Gomer-Davies a former Llandovery College captain - turned out five times and scored 45 points in appearances between 1992-1996.

As far as it can be ascertained no Llandovery player has represented the Baa Baas direct from the club – who might be the first?

CROSS KEYS

Last Saturday’s visitors to Church Bank were Cross Keys, who inflicted a heavy 37-8 defeat on the Drovers back on December 12.

Two former Llandovery College pupils, full back Neil Davies and hooker Richard Emms, are part of their squad
