DROVERS TITTLE-TATTLE 10 March 2010
A weekly diary of news from Church Bank by Huw S Thomas
NEWPORT
This Saturday’s Llandovery v Newport Premiership game at Church Bank kicks off at 12 .15 after the club acceded to the Black and Ambers request to move the game from Friday night.
The Ireland v Wales game at Croke Park (KO 2 30) will be on the big screen in the clubhouse with food and beer at competitive prices.
“CANTONA”
The biggest cheer of the day last Saturday was reserved for veteran prop Andrew Jones who came on a replacement for the last 15 minutes of the game v Cross Keys.
The 36 year-old club stalwart has been loaned to Whitland in recent months but it was good to see the ever-popular "Cantona" back in the Llandovery shirt once again
“RINGO”
Pacing up and down in front of the stands last week was one of Wales’s finest ever centres in Mark Ring - now aged 46 and backs coach to Cross Keys.
Earning 32 Welsh caps, he was regarded as among the most gifted players of his generation but his career was hampered by serious injury.
He is still remembered at Llandovery for nonchalantly back-heeling conversions when playing for Crawshay’s Welsh against Llandovery College on Tredegar Close.
PADDY POWER
Bookmakers Paddy Power have had Llandovery at 28-1 to get to the top eight play-offs and then go on to win the Premiership title outright.
It is a bet that could give supporters a lot of fun if not profit come the end of May. The grand final is scheduled for May 23
CERITH REES
The signing at the start of the season of former Wales A, Grenoble and Albi fly-half Cerith Rees is proving a major factor in the club’s success.
With 169 league points plus 30 Cup points, the Llanwrda born Rees has been in outstanding kicking form for the Drovers.
TREGIB CS
Tregib CS - the old Llandeilo GS - has the largest representation of former pupils in the Premiership squad at Church Bank.
Matthew Jacobs, Lee Rees, Howard Thomas, Rob Walters and Adam Yelland all attended the Ffairfach based comprehensive.
